The phase of being a student is undoubtedly the busiest and the most productive phase of a person’s life. In this phase an individual learns various things from different sources, the most important of them being his/her ‘School’. Many of us might wonder that why do parents want their kids to do every activity possible during this phase as it is quite tiring for their child, but the reason behind this is that at this age a person has an impressionable mind and whatever he/she learns gets stored permanently in the mind. Hence, besides their everyday routine of studies there is also a very important aspect which is often neglected or not giving enough importance, that aspect is the value of sports and games in a student’s life.
Have you ever thought that why do you have a PT period or a Sports period in your curriculum? It is because even this subject is as important as the others as whatever stress you get from learning all the theoretical subjects is busted by this physical activity-oriented subject. We never realize this at our young age but once we get mature we value its importance. Therefore further I would like to list down certain qualities which help in the development of an individual both physically and mentally.
Learn time management and discipline- Whenever an individual is engaged in a sports activity he/she leans the value of being punctual and disciplined. For eg: If Rohan is having a badminton class at 4:00 PM, he would be mentally prepared to reach on time so that he gets to play more and is not punished for being late. This will eventually cultivate a habit of being on time thereby inducing discipline in her life. With time the same would reflect in the different spheres of her life leading to the overall development of personality.
Improves leadership and team-building qualities- ‘Alone we can do so little but together we can do so much.’ Have you ever seen ants making an anthill? They work in a very systematic and cooperative manner so as to achieve their target. They work in groups and shifts thereby teaching us a very wise life lesson that is ‘teamwork’. Whenever an individual works in a team he/she become more open to opinions thereby increasing the horizon of their thinking and also more considerate towards others feeling, making them emotionally radiant.
Winning and losing are all part of the game- Sports and games teach you a quality which no other subject can that is the positive spirit to accept defeat. As great thinkers said ‘Without tasting defeat, one can never celebrate winning’ and thus whenever you lose in a sport or game you are taught to accept it and improve it. Instead of cribbing over it, a Sportsman/Sportswomen are always taught to own their mistakes and not repeat them the next time. This quality is equally important in different instances of your life.
Improves physical and mental health- Sports and games help in the circulation of essential liquids in the body which helps in the boosting of the immunity of an individual. They also keep your muscles relax and increase the agility of your body. With regards to your mental health, they regulate the secretion of Dopamine and Adrenaline in your brain giving it energy and recreation. They also expand the capacity of your lungs and pump your heart to provide blood circulation throughout the body. With the increase in blood circulation, the essential vitamins and minerals reach all the body parts thereby making you healthier and immune to diseases.
Boosts self-confidence- Whenever you perform well in a sport or win a game for your team or play exceptionally well in a match your efforts are appreciated and awarded thereby instilling self-confidence in your personality. Being confident is a very important aspect of an individual’s life as it gives you the courage to try out new things in life. Whenever a person is confident reflects on his/her behavior as he/she becomes much more positive and happy. Confidence also helps in taking crucial life decisions and gives you a sense of individuality.
Therefore in conclusion I would like to state that sports and gameplay a very important role in an individual’s life as they also instill a competitive spirit in an individual which is very important for leading a happy and content life. One should always, in a day, keep some time apart for sports activities as they play an equally important role in the growth and nourishment of a child and his/her personality. When a child will be physically and mentally fresh only then would he be able to perform up to his potential.
As said by the legend Herb Brooks “You were born to be a player. You were meant to be here. This moment is yours.”
